How to Apply Dark Mode to Websites in Chrome

Did you know that the white background of the computer windows we use causes eye strain? This article will show you how to set Chrome to dark mode.

If you're using Windows 11, you can apply a dark mode to Chrome itself by selecting Darken Colors in your personal settings, but this option won't change the background color of your website.

​However, in Chrome, you can apply an extension to darken the background of your website.

Chrome has an option to render website content with a black theme. However, that option is a hidden flag setting in Chrome's Experiments tab. You can apply dark mode to your website by enabling the automatic dark mode flag for your web content.

Step 1: Open Google Chrome, type [chrome://flags/] in the address bar and press Enter.

​Step 2: Now enter the keyword [enable force dark] in the search flag box at the top of the experiment tab.

​Step 3: Change the default Forced Dark Mode to Enabled and press the Relaunch button in the lower right corner.

Dark mode is now applied. Please enjoy the Internet comfortably.

2. How to Apply Dark Mode to Your Website Using Dark Reader Extension

Dark Reader is one of those extensions that includes a dark mode as well as some nice options.

Step 1: First, download Dark Reader from here and install it.

​Step 2: After installing Dark Reader, click the extension's button in Chrome's URL toolbar. If you can't see it, click on the expandable puzzle piece icon and select the Dark Reader's Pin option as below.

Step 3: Press the Dark Reader button to open the add-on as shown in the snapshot just below.

​By default, click on the Dark Mode option from there if it is not already selected. This will apply a black background to most website pages. You can toggle it back easily by clicking on the extension's light or off option.

​You can also customize the dark theme using other options in the extension. Click the left and right arrow buttons for the Brightness , Contrast , Sepia and Gray scale settings to configure their options.
